REPORT CARDS Report Cards will be sent home during the last week before winter break.  Within the report envelopes there will be a student reflection document as well as some other enclosures for some students.  On reflection, I have been very impressed by the collective efforts and growth within the group.  I look forward to what lies ahead in the new year. "Mixed Nuts" PRESENTATION Division 5 will be walking to the QE theatre to enjoy a holiday presentation of the "Mixed Nuts" Ballet performed by the Arts Umbrella on December 11th   A notice was sent home yesterday and we have space for three parents to join us for this walking field trip and help with supervision.  Please contact me directly today (Thursday) if you are able to join us. WEATHER CONDITIONS As expected, our weather has taken a turn over the last week.  Thank you for sending your children  prepared for the conditions. Jackets, boots, indoor shoes and umbrellas are going to be essential equipment for the next few months as students go outside for each recess and lunch session. LONG DIVISION REVIEW This week students were engaged with long division.  We have been reviewing the concept of dividing things evenly and with remainders.  There has been time for independent practice and sharing with partners.  This work will continue next week as we try to get all students more comfortable with the concepts and step associated with long division. NOVEL STUDIES DUE MONDAY Students have been working on a novel study over the last month based on new book of their choosing.  They are providing an overview of the story elements (plot, setting, conflict, climax/conclusion, characters) along with a review for their book.  Please check i...

PERSONAL GOALS This week, students started writing out their goals for the year.  They were looking at communication as a core competency and applied this to goal-setting in socially / academically.  A draft of their goals will come home for discussion next week. FIELD TRIP Thank you to the many families who have already returned their Field Studies form for our trip to the Grey Cup Festival on Thursday, November 14th.  We also had a great response for parent volunteers.  I was not able to accommodate everyone but the following parents will joining us next week:   Ms. Van Gvozdanovic, Ms. Liu,  Ms. Tanveer, Mr. Peresada and Mr. Hatty.  I will provide more specific details to our parent volunteer group on Tuesday.  Thanks for volunteering! B.C. SPORTS HALL OF FAME FIELD TRIP Division 5 enjoyed a great field trip today to B.C.s Sports Hall of Fame.  Students were treated to a presentation by Lori  Fung,  Olympic gold medalist, who shared her insights on success and setting goals.  Students were all able to hold the gold medal she won in the 1984 Olympics for rhythmic gymnastics.  After this presentation students explored the hall with a scavenger hunt and tested their athletic abilities in the participation zone.  Division 5 represented Elsie Roy proudly.  Special thanks to our parent volunteers today, Ms. Manavi and Ms. Zhang , who made our trip possible. HALLOWEEN CLASS PARTY Division 5 will be having a Halloween party during the afternoon next Thursday.   Please do not sent in any treats or candy as I will be providing these for the party. STUDENT VOTE Division 5 will be hosting a STUDENT VOTE for intermediate students on Friday,  October 18th.  We will be overseeing the process, issuing and receiving ballots from all of the student voters.   Students will get to choose between the three provincial political parties in B.C.:  NDP, CONSERVATIVE and GREEN.   We will be continuing our discussion on political parties next week and any follow up at home would be greatly appreciated in advance of our student vote. DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION This week Ms. McCleary and I spoke with all of the grade 5 students about being inclusive and making everyone feel welcome. There have been some days where students have been left feeling excluded during play time and we had a health discussion in both classes about how we can make everyone feel included.  As well, we address a specific issue on the playground that was very derogatory towards members of the LGBTQ+ community.  Students were challenging each oth...

  ORANGE SHIRT DAY: September 30 Monday is Orange Shirt Day and we are encouraging our students to wear orange if possible.  This is a national day when we honour the indigenous children and their families who were impacted by the residential school system.  Division 5 created some orange shirts this week and read about a first hand experience within the book, I Am Not a Number.  Elsie Roy will be closed on Monday in honour of this national day of Truth and Reconciliation. MATH QUIZ: During our first few weeks, students have been reviewing and learning about the following concepts: less than/greater than, identifying place value, decimals and rounding.  We will have our first quiz in the coming days and I will send home an outline next week for students to use as a guide in preparation.   UNITS OF STUDY:   Division 5 has started the following units of study in the core subjects : Math:  Students are exploring patterns, place value and basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplying and dividing) and problem solving. Language: Students are discussing the parts of speech followed by punctuation rules, sentence structure and paragraph writing. Reading:   Students are developing their reading skills:  skimming, summarizing, inferring and more.  Students have also begun independent Novel Studies and identifying the elements of a story. (Three Little Pigs Sample). Social Studies:   Students are reviewing our understanding of Canada geography before we begin our work with levels of government. Science:   Students have just launched into a unit of flight where will be exploring its history, the forces involved and conducting a number of related experiments.
