STUDENT VOTE
Division 5 will be hosting a STUDENT VOTE for intermediate students on Friday, October 18th. We will be overseeing the process, issuing and receiving ballots from all of the student voters. Students will get to choose between the three provincial political parties in B.C.: NDP, CONSERVATIVE and GREEN. We will be continuing our discussion on political parties next week and any follow up at home would be greatly appreciated in advance of our student vote.
DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
This week Ms. McCleary and I spoke with all of the grade 5 students about being inclusive and making everyone feel welcome. There have been some days where students have been left feeling excluded during play time and we had a health discussion in both classes about how we can make everyone feel included. As well, we address a specific issue on the playground that was very derogatory towards members of the LGBTQ+ community. Students were challenging each other to freeze and the first to move was "gay". It was very disappointing to hear about such a game and we followed up with both classes. Part of that discussion included sharing a short video which celebrates diversity in all forms: age, ethnicity, religion, sexuality and those differently abled. FIELD TRIP: OCTOBER 24th
I am pleased to announce Division 5 will be participating in a field trip on Thursday, October 24th from 10am - 1pm (approximately). We will be visiting the B.C. Sports Hall Of Fame to meet with a former Olympic Gold Medallist (Lori Fung) to connect with the student goal setting which is happening over the coming weeks. It should be a great experience and I will be sending home a permission form next week.
READING
This week we started reading a class novel, Mr. Poppers Penguins. It is a fun story that will allow student to read orally, demonstrate comprehension, expand vocabulary and explore the elements of a story. This week we look at clues from the first few chapters and indicated the setting for this story.
MATH
Students completed their first math quiz last week (place value / decimals) and it is coming home for you to sign. Some students were also provided with an additional review sheet (blue) for them to complete if they would like to improve their assessment. Please sign the quiz and have it returned for Tuesday. We are currently working on 2-3 digit operations and will soon be reviewing long division.
