WEEK ONE DONE

FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL
Hello again Div. 5 families.  We just finished our first week together and I was left with a great  impression of our group,  I'm looking forward to learning more about division 5 in the coming months.  This week we worked on the following:
  • engaged in team building with a variety of activities designed to build connections (friendship bingo, 20 questions, space survival challenge, PE, journal sharing and more.)
  • reviewed  grade 3 & 4 Math units / concepts
  • began a unit on the geography of Canada for Social Studies
  • started our weekly Spelling Program
  • completed some directed drawing activities in Art
  • wrote in our Journals, a weekly activity
  • ran hard for the Terry FOX RUN
I will send out our class timetable/schedule next week once it is finalized.  As we ease into the year you can expect us to begin regularly using two websites (Get Epic! and  Prodigy for math) to supplement our efforts. These can be accessed from home. Students will also be reviewing basic math facts by setting up drills at www.webmathminute.com. This should be a useful resource at home.  This blog will work to keep you up to date on our classrooms planning.

BIRTHDAYS
I have created a list of our class birthdays and plan to recognize each one this year.  We have already celebrated our summer and a few September birthdays.  Students received a pencil and a treat.  I am asking that families NOT send in treats for their child's birthday.  This can become a challenge in the classroom.

REMINDERS
  • Students were provided with their agendas and I will be checking them daily (with some exceptions) at the end of the day.  If you have a note for me please have your child bring it to me first thing in the morning.  (An email may be best: mcarruthers@vsb.bc.ca)
  • we completed ou Terry Fox Run today from 1:30-2:30pm. We had less than ideal conditions but our students worked hard.  Elsie Roy will still be accepting donations until early next week and these can be brought to the classroom processed online.
  • we will have our second spelling unit presented on Monday with the follow up test on Thursday due to the short week.
    • Please help make sure the students bring their spelling books back to school on Monday
  • Elsie Roy Elementary will be closed for instruction on  Friday, September 19th.
