ORANGE SHIRT DAY: September 30

Monday is Orange Shirt Day and we are encouraging our students to wear orange if possible.  This is a national day when we honour the indigenous children and their families who were impacted by the residential school system.  Division 5 created some orange shirts this week and read about a first hand experience within the book, I Am Not a Number.  Elsie Roy will be closed on Monday in honour of this national day of Truth and Reconciliation.

MATH QUIZ:

During our first few weeks, students have been reviewing and learning about the following concepts: less than/greater than, identifying place value, decimals and rounding.  We will have our first quiz in the coming days and I will send home an outline next week for students to use as a guide in preparation.

STUDENT VOTE:

Division 6 will be hosting the student vote at Elsie Roy this year.  This will run parallel with the provincial election and our students will have an opportunity to monitor the process.  We are currently looking at the levels of government in Canada and any conversations you can have at home would greatly support our efforts.

CLUBS AT ELSIE ROY

Grade 5 students have an opportunity to join a number of clubs that have recently started: cross country, math club, choir and indoor soccer (November start).  Interested students may also seek to represent our class on student council.  I am hopeful that students will seek out some of these opportunities if they have not already.

WEEK ONE DONE

FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL Hello again Div. 5 families.  We just finished our first week together and I was left with a great  impression  of our group,  I'm looking forward to learning more about division 5 in the coming months.  This week we worked on the following: engaged in team building with a variety of activities designed to build connections (friendship bingo, 20 questions, Frisbee Bocci, combined PE class with all grade 5 students.) reviewed  grade 4 Math units / concepts   began a unit on Flight/Forces in Science completed a map of Canada for Social Studies   started our weekly Spelling Program  completed some directed drawing activities in Art wrote in our Journals, a weekly activity I will send out our class timetable/schedule next week once it is finalized.  As we ease into the year you can expect us to begin regularly using two websites ( Get Epic! and   Prodigy  for math) to supplement our efforts.   UNITS OF STUDY:   Division 5 has started the following units of study in the core subjects : Math:  Students are exploring patterns, place value and basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplying and dividing) and problem solving. Language: Students are discussing the parts of speech followed by punctuation rules, sentence structure and paragraph writing. Reading:   Students are developing their reading skills:  skimming, summarizing, inferring and more.  Students have also begun independent Novel Studies and identifying the elements of a story. (Three Little Pigs Sample). Social Studies:   Students are reviewing our understanding of Canada geography before we begin our work with levels of government. Science:   Students have just launched into a unit of flight where will be exploring its history, the forces involved and conducting a number of related experiments.
