B.C. SPORTS HALL OF FAME FIELD TRIP
HALLOWEEN CLASS PARTY
Division 5 will be having a Halloween party during the afternoon next Thursday. Please do not sent in any treats or candy as I will be providing these for the party. Students are welcome to wear a costume but it is not mandatory. Please keep weapons and large accessories at home. Our day will begin with a school-wide assembly and end with a class "party" which will consist of some scary stories, bingo and games. It should be a fun day but I'm already looking forward to 3pm:)
ACTING COURSES
During our conferences last week there was a lot of discussion about finding after school activities for children, particularly for acting. Our class really enjoyed the 3 Young Actors Project sessions scheduled for our class in October and many students found a surprise talent. Unfortunately the YAP does not provide programming outside of school but there are a number of programs available for children in Vancouver. One of them is through the Arts Umbrella and you can find more information at this link: https://www.artsumbrella.com/programs/theatre-music/.
There was also some interest in chess and Vancouver's Chess School is hosting some upcoming camps for kids: https://www.vanchess.ca/
CURRENT EVENTS
Students will be orally presenting their current events stories next week. You can find the wild array of stories listed below along with your child's presentation date. The assignment guidelines and criteria were provided to students last week and sent home electronically. Please provide some opportunities for your child to present at home and consider: timing, clarity, pacing, enthusiasm and eye contact. Thank you!

MATH
This week we started work on multiplication with 2-3 digit numbers. We have been completing drills and playing cards games to review basic multiplication facts and it would be great if this could also happen at home. Students have a times-table in their agendas and I am encouraging them to regularly test themselves. As well, we complete drills online each week at www.webmathminute.com this would be a great resource for students to use at home. Each session only require 5-10 minutes. Students have all been able to navigate the site and set up their own challenges.
Thus far, it is apparent most students do not yet have a steady recall of basic math facts and this is complicating our progress as we move into operations that involve more than one step. I will continue to focus on this work in the classroom and any support you can provide would be greatly appreciated. You can also find some additional hands-on multiplication games at this link: math games.
