TARDINESS AND ABSENTEEISM

I have noticed an increasing trend of tardiness since November.  I'm aware that the mornings can be a stressful time as families try to launch another day but we routinely have 6-8 students arrive late each morning which can be a challenging way to start the day for everyone involved.  Illness has also been a concern of late with a number of students away each day. Please let me know if there are some further complications that I may not be aware of or if I can help in any way through a conversation with your child.  Students should be lined up in the courtyard shortly after the 8:55am bell.  Thank you in advance for your attention to this.

YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS FAIR

Grade 5 students will be hosting a Young Entrepreneurs Fair once again this year and your child will be involved.  Our fair will be hosted on Friday, May 16 and there is a lot of work for students to complete before we get to that point.  A letter will be sent home to families prior to Spring Break, providing more details about this project and you can find more information at the following link: https://www.powerplay4success.com/.  Each student will have their own booklet and we will be walking through the many steps as a class.  This project will definitely involve work and planning at home.  We had great success with this last year and I'm looking forward to what this year's fair will bring.  In the meantime, it may be helpful to discuss some potential ideas with students and introduce them to the notion of costs/profits.   During Spring break we will ask for students to produce a prototype for their product but please DO NOT begin this stage until I provide another update.  Thanks for your help with this!

MATH

Students will be wrapping up our data analysis unit (graphing, probability, data sets) next week before beginning a unit on financial literacy in preparation for the Young Entrepreneurs project.

MERCI!

Thank you for your support with our French family trees.  Students have been gathering the names of relatives and matching them with the corresponding French vocabulary terms.  This work has let to a great finished product and an increased familiarity with the terms involved.

STUDENT VOTE Division 5 will be hosting a STUDENT VOTE for intermediate students on Friday,  October 18th.  We will be overseeing the process, issuing and receiving ballots from all of the student voters.   Students will get to choose between the three provincial political parties in B.C.:  NDP, CONSERVATIVE and GREEN.   We will be continuing our discussion on political parties next week and any follow up at home would be greatly appreciated in advance of our student vote. DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION This week Ms. McCleary and I spoke with all of the grade 5 students about being inclusive and making everyone feel welcome. B.C. SPORTS HALL OF FAME FIELD TRIP Division 5 enjoyed a great field trip today to B.C.s Sports Hall of Fame.  Students were treated to a presentation by Lori  Fung,  Olympic gold medalist, who shared her insights on success and setting goals.  Students were all able to hold the gold medal she won in the 1984 Olympics for rhythmic gymnastics.  After this presentation students explored the hall with a scavenger hunt and tested their athletic abilities in the participation zone.  Division 5 represented Elsie Roy proudly.  Special thanks to our parent volunteers today, Ms. Manavi and Ms. Zhang , who made our trip possible. HALLOWEEN CLASS PARTY Division 5 will be having a Halloween party during the afternoon next Thursday.   Please do not sent in any treats or candy as I will be providing these for the party. WEEK ONE DONE

FIRST WEEK OF SCHOOL Hello again Div. 5 families.  We just finished our first week together and I was left with a great  impression  of our group,  I'm looking forward to learning more about division 5 in the coming months.  This week we worked on the following: engaged in team building with a variety of activities designed to build connections (friendship bingo, 20 questions, Frisbee Bocci, combined PE class with all grade 5 students.) reviewed  grade 4 Math units / concepts   began a unit on Flight/Forces in Science completed a map of Canada for Social Studies   started our weekly Spelling Program  completed some directed drawing activities in Art wrote in our Journals, a weekly activity I will send out our class timetable/schedule next week once it is finalized.  As we ease into the year you can expect us to begin regularly using two websites ( Get Epic! and   Prodigy  for math) to supplement our efforts.
