PERSONAL GOALS

This week, students started writing out their goals for the year.  They were looking at communication as a core competency and applied this to goal-setting in socially / academically.  A draft of their goals will come home for discussion next week.

FIELD TRIP

Thank you to the many families who have already returned their Field Studies form for our trip to the Grey Cup Festival on Thursday, November 14th.  We also had a great response for parent volunteers.  I was not able to accommodate everyone but the following parents will joining us next week:  Ms. Van Gvozdanovic, Ms. Liu,  Ms. Tanveer, Mr. Peresada and Mr. Hatty.  I will provide more specific details to our parent volunteer group on Tuesday.  Thanks for volunteering!

STUDENT COUNCIL

Two weeks ago,  Elsie Roy's grade 3-7 classes chose student council representatives in advance of our first meeting scheduled for next Thursday.  In division 5, interested students prepared a speech and presented their ideas to the class before we conducted a vote.  I was very impressed by the fact that nine students put their names forward and modelled risk-taking for the group.   The speeches were well done and gave us some great ideas for the classroom. After the vote, we were left with 2 representatives who will share duties: Abigail and Brett.  Vienna and River will serve as our alternates as needed.  Congratulations to all participants and we look forward to implementing our student council's plans.

MATH

Next week, we will begin our work on division and "long" division.  I am encouraging students to review their math facts at home through the use of playing card games or the times table found in their agenda.   Typically this is a concept (long division) that can be a challenge for many students.  It will be introduced in the coming days but also revisited throughout the year so that students get comfortable with the steps involved. Like other challenging ideas,  it is important that students approach the work with a growth mindset.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

Division 5 will be proudly presenting at Elsie Roy's Remembrance Day service tomorrow. We will be joined by division 6 and to recite "In Flanders Fields" by John McRae.  They worked hard to memorize this poem over the last week and I appreciate your help with this at home.   Parents are welcome to join us for the service at 9:30am tomorrow.

ELSIE ROY WILL BE CLOSED ON MONDAY DUE REMEMBRANCE DAY
