HALLOWEEN

We have a number of fun events planned over the coming days, beginning with Halloween crafts next week.  On October 31, classes will be participating in a costume parade and division 5 will be enjoying Halloween themed work all day. Our festivities will conclude with a party in the afternoon (and a big sigh from me:)  With this in mind,  I will use class funds to purchase some treats so there will be no need for families to provide anything for our party.

Students are invited to wear their costumes for Halloween but this is entirely optional.  Please have students keep weapons or large props at home.   

NOVEL STUDY


Students have a Novel Study / Book Report due on November 14th.  The intention is for this assignment to be completed with a chapter book that is new to them.  Each day we have 20 minutes of Reading time in class where they can work on their novel study and finish their book.  Students completed a draft version using the story of the "Three Little Pigs" and they will be provided with a new Novel Study worksheet next week.  Our Novel Study centers on the elements of a story:  setting, plot, characters, conflict, climax and conclusion.

CURRENT EVENTS: Oral Presentation

We enjoyed our first group of presenters today for Current Events.  All students have been asked to prepare a 1-2 minute summary of a news story they selected.  They are to present the 5w's (who, what, when, where and why) and take questions at the conclusion of their presentation.  Here is the schedule for the rest of our presenters next week:

Monday:  Pasha, Bara, Brayden, Seb, Mack  Elliot

Tuesday: Parsa, Aidan, Liam, Naomi, Oliver, Hudson

Wednesday: Elizabeth, Ava, Ethan, Farzam, Gabriela, Evan

Thursday: Kyle, Kellen, Tima, Kiara

  UNITS OF STUDY:   Division 5 has started the following units of study in the Core Subjects : Math:  Students are exploring patterns, place value and basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplying and dividing) and problem solving. Language: Students are discussing the parts of speech followed by punctuation rules, sentence structure and paragraph writing. Reading:   Students are developing their reading skills:  skimming, summarizing, inferring and more.  Students have also begun independent Novel Studies (Three Little Pigs Sample). Social Studies:   Students are reviewing our understanding of Canada geography before we begin our work with immigration. SOCIAL STUDIES Next week we will begin our unit of citizenship and the levels of governments in Canada.  Students will be exploring rights and responsibilities as well as the key structures in Canada's governance.  Any discussions at home in support of this work would be helpful. MATH:  FRACTIONS This week and next,  we are reviewing / comparing fractions, decimals and percentages.  I will be sending home a quiz outline soon for our final review before moving on to discuss probability, data collection and graphing.  Please provide your child with opportunities to regularly review basic math fact on www.webmathminute.com. STUDENT PORTFOLIOS Students will soon begin organizing their portfolios and sort through a variety of assignments and activities.  It has been very rewarding to see so much evidence of progress throughout the curricular areas. TARDINESS I have noticed an increasing trend of tardiness since November.  I'm aware that the mornings can be a stressful time as families try to launch another day but we routinely have 6-8 students arrive late each morning which can be a challenging way to start the day for everyone involved.  Please let me know if there are some further complications that I may not be aware of or if I can help in any way through a conversation with your child.  Students should be lined up in the courtyard shortly after the 8:55am bell.  Thank you in advance for your attention to this.
